February 2nd

(happy 1st birthday to my awesome nephew, Emmaus!)
(this is not a picture of him. I'm just saying happy birthday)
This was the highlight of my day. It happened right before bedtime. I came out of the bathroom to find this. And as you can see, he was pretty happy with himself. It gave me a good laugh at the end of a long, hard day.

In case you haven't heard, we had something of a blizzard last night and into this morning. So there was no school today. There was no nothing today. The banks were closed, the Y was closed, the coffee shop, I don't even know what else because I didn't leave the house. Last night I was excited for a snow day. I guess there's this lingering mindset left over from childhood, but I love watching closings, and I get so excited when I see "our" school on the list. My husband doubted I would still have that enthusiasm by tonight. He was very, very right. It was gone before I was even out of bed this morning.

We have a rule that the girls are not allowed out of bed until 7am on a non-school day. They have a digital clock in their room, and they know what the number 7 looks like. I'm sure they wait in bed watching the 6, waiting for it to turn to 7, because most mornings I hear them come down the stairs at 7:02. They've always been really good at following the rule. I really have no idea what happened this morning. I actually heard them and assumed it was after 7. After a while I rolled over and looked at the clock and was shocked to find that it was only 6:40. Not only were they up, but they were making all kinds of noise, messing with a basket full of framed pictures that I have yet to hang back on the wall, when I distinctly told them last night to stay out of the basket. I was MAD. I got up, sent them each to a separate couch, told them not to get up til I get up, then went back to bed. I couldn't go back to sleep, but I waited about a half hour because I wanted them to lay on the couch quietly for a while. Then they were grounded from TV and computer all day. On a snow day. What was I thinking? I was thinking I don't need to be woken up at 6:30 in the morning on a day off school, and I wanted them to remember what happens when they don't wait til 7. And then I just couldn't snap out of my bad mood.

Sage was complaining of a stomach ache all morning, and later in the morning she threw up. Thankfully I was prepared with a bucket this time (she had the same symptom as Jayna had the other day when she threw up), so there was no nasty clean up. Then she mostly just slept the rest of the day. My little angel.

Jayna was mostly good. But the boys... THE BOYS! Maybe they're not feeling well either, I don't know, but they did not stop whining the entire day. I don't know what it is about whining, but it just sucks the life right out of me. They would whine to be picked up, then when I'd pick them up they'd squirm and throw a fit on my lap, and try to get down, then when they're back down, they're throwing a fit because I put them down, and they're asking to get back up again. They would ask for food, then I'd feed them, and they'd throw their food all over the floor, so I'd take them out of their chairs, then they'd throw a fit because they wanted to eat... ALL DAY. I never did figure out what they really wanted, except that maybe they were just tired. They had early naps, early dinners, and I put the youngest to bed at 5:30, which is unheard-of-early. I half expected him to either not go to sleep, or wake up an hour later, but he was still out when I put the rest of them to bed. So, hopefully he sleeps all night and is rested and refreshed in the morning. Hopefully I am too. And I'm off to Jeanninieland (that's a throw back to jr. high, if any of you long-timers remember).
