Picture-A-Day:
Eight loaves of bread dough, headed to the freezer. I LOVE homemade bread. I don't have a bread machine, so I make it by hand. It's a lot of work. It takes up a whole morning or afternoon. I usually make 4 loaves at a time, but that only lasts a couple weeks, and then by the time we run out it takes a while before I get a chance to make more. So this time I made 8 loaves. I had to use 2 bowls - I basically used my recipe for 4 loaves, and did it twice. One batch is regular whole wheat, and the other is white whole wheat. I think it was more time-efficient, because I only had to get the ingredients and dishes out once, and only had to wash the dishes once. It took a little extra time to measure and pour everything twice, and I had to knead for 20 minutes instead of 10 (that was tough!), but I think overall, it's worth making 8 loaves at a time. I'm not sure I could do any more than that, but that should be a month's worth of bread.

  2. Wowzer! That sounds great. Did you say you freeze the dough? Do you let it rise later? This morning I made 6 mini loaves of rhubarb bread (just cut the rhubarb this morning). And dad and I are making 20-some pasties again. Must be the kind of day. Finally sunny here, but cool.

  3. mom - yeah, I freeze the dough, then I let it sit out for about 18 hours (ish) to let it thaw and rise. I take it out in the afternoon, the bake it first thing the next morning.

  4. your mom asked my question - and you answered. i've never tried freezing my dough . . . i just may have to try this - because when i make three or four loaves, the last one or two are on their way to being too dry when we get to them.

  5. I figured you can buy lumps of frozen bread dough at the grocery store, why not freeze my own dough? It doesn't rise quite as beautifully as it does when it's fresh, but it's good enough for me to not have to make it every week.
