March 9th

Picture-A-Day:
Mmmm, oatmeal. I LOVE just about anything made from oats. Bread, cookies, granola, and even plain old oatmeal. But not plain. Or old. But you know what I mean. I set this up last night in my small slow-cooker. I put in all the regular ingredients you'd use to make oatmeal - oats, water, dash of salt (actually I forgot the salt, but added it in the morning because it tasted bland). Then added some chunks of apple (peels on - that's the good part!), cinnamon, and honey to sweeten. Talk about super healthy, right? Since there's nothing perishable in there, I left it on the counter and set a timer on it (one of those timers you plug your lights into when you go on vacation), and set it to turn on at about 5:30, so breakfast was ready when everyone got up at 6:45-ish. It was DELISH! About half of my family ate a good portion of it. Jayna didn't like it, and the boys picked at it, but all got eaten. And I was a little bummed because I found myself craving more throughout the day. Somehow it was better than stove top oatmeal. I think maybe because the oats soaked in the water all night? It seemed like they were mushier and more thoroughly cooked. Next time I'm gonna try it with blueberries. And then maybe peaches. I'll definitely be doing this again. I'm trying to come up with healthy breakfast options that don't take a lot of work in the morning. I'm just not a "cook breakfast" person.

I've been thinking that I should have called this series "A Real Housewife of Elkhart County." Have you ever seen one of those "real housewife" shows???? Oh my goodness, they're appalling. All I can say is, those are NOT real housewives. They have no idea how easy they have it. They should do a "REAL real housewife" show.

And one last thing... I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL ORIENTATION TONIGHT. Not for me, FOR MY DAUGHTER!!!!!! HOW OLD AM I???? I'm actually not as freaked out as I was when she was about to start middle school. I think I'm looking forward to high school because I'm hoping the middle school craziness will be left behind. Here's hoping. If you have (or have had) a middle schooler, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Especially if you're a step mom. Orientation was torture, mainly because of one particular toddler who absolutely refused to do anything but run away from me. I left early.

  1. Oh my gosh, that oatmeal looks sooooooo good, and I don't even like apples, haha! I'm thinking about trying this at home, but with chocolate chips :) Bet it would make the chocolate all melty and now I'm starving, THANKS Jeannine! :P

We registered our daughter for high school this year, too. Freaked me out. She was FOUR when I met her!!!

  2. I wish my kids liked oatmeal more. They go through fazes. Right now they are into cereal which works out ok. Something about a warm bowl of oatmeal or cream of wheat is what I would rather have on a dreary rainy day like today.
