March 26th
Saturday morning I took Sage to a Young Author's Conference. It was really pretty cool. They had a chance to write and share their own book with a small group of kids their age. Then there was a children's book author/illustrator there doing a little presentation. Mostly he was doing some marketing for his books, and he spent some time teaching the kids how to do simple illustrations. Then they had a little seminar (that is what the picture is) in which an art teacher taught them how to illustrate a book using flat objects (ripped paper, pictures from magazines, etc) to make a collage. It was really neat, and kind of opened the doors for them to use creativity in making books, instead of just following the basic, write the words, draw a picture - which is great too. It was great for Sage because she tends to be a rule-follower, and I always see a light go on for her when somebody shows her that it's ok to think outside "the box" and be creative. She had a good time, and we followed it with lunch at Panera. It was a great little mommy-Sage time, which doesn't happen often enough.
