Family Road Trip (part 7)

Yellowstone: day 1, part 2

This post starts after we saw Old Faithful.  Yellowstone has a figure-8 type road with all the little stops and things to see.  There is SO MUCH more to the park, but since there were so many of us, plus small children, plus limited time, we basically just followed the loop.  This first day we did the Southern loop.

Basically, we just drove along and anytime we saw something interesting, we'd stop and see it.  This was a pretty little trail off the road a bit, we decided to walk it.

There were so many beautiful wild flowers.

We got back on the road, and ran into this lovely traffic jam.
We quickly learned that traffic jams usually meant people were stopping to look at wild animals.

And we also realized that we had just driven into buffalo territory.
The butt-sniffing is apparently part of some kind of mating/dominance ritual

I love this picture, because in my rear view mirror, you can see Jacob leaning out taking a picture in the car behind us.

more of the mating/dominance ritual.  This was a bit frightening.  This bull fight was not far from where were stuck in traffic, and these animals were pretty oblivious to us - there was nothing to keep them from driving their fight right into a car.  Thankfully, that didn't happen.
